This morning, I went to the P.O. box to check the mail, and inside was a note with a card—and a check.
Sometimes I get just as excited about the note as I do the check. That might surprise people. But this note was especially meaningful, and here’s why.
This was the first letter we have received where the note was addressed directly to Carol.
It expressed their support of the vision I started, their continued allegiance to the IBC Network Foundation, and, most importantly, their confidence in Carol in her new role as Executive Director. That confidence was backed up by a significant check, but it was the words that stopped me.
This felt like a momentum moment.
I actually put the note in a frame, and I’m going to give it to Carol to put in her office. I think it is something she should treasure.
The transfer of my role has not always been easy for me. In some ways, it hasn’t been easy for Carol either. For so many years, this organization has been my baby.
I am busier than ever and deeply committed to my new role as Chair. In fact, I am grateful for the opportunity to focus so completely on the work that belongs to me now.
But letting go of the day-to-day leadership of something you built is a different kind of letting go.
And yet, I’m not letting go of anything at all.
Carol and I are taking this transfer of power, trust, and responsibility very seriously. We know what it means. We know what is at stake. And we both want to honor what has been built while continuing to move the organization forward.
So to open that P.O. box this morning and find a letter addressed to Carol—to see one of our donors not only supporting the IBC Network Foundation, but embracing **her** leadership—meant more to me than I can really put into words.
This is growth.
This is confidence.
This is the direction we hoped to see.
And today, it became something I could put in a frame.
A keepsake moment.
